Gear for YSAR Exercises

ESSENTIAL GEAR FOR YSAR EXERCISES

Within the first weeks of the program, we will talk about the best gear options, so do not rush out and buy new things too soon.

As a standard for YSAR exercise you will be required to have the following items. Instruction will be given to you when you start as to what the gear requirements are. We do not expect you to have all the equipment on this list the first month of YSAR.

YSAR START-UP KIT 

YSAR will issue new students with a basic start-up kit. This includes essential items that students will need for weekend exercises. Start-up kits include:

  • Cooking Stove
  • Head Lamp
  • Survival Blanket
  • Whistle
  • Pack Liner
  • Reflectorised Vest
  • Compass
  • Reusable Emergency Blanket

YSAR FIRST AID KIT 

Students are required to carry a personal First Aid kit at all times. This includes essential items that students will need for minor injuries, sprains and strains. Personal First Aid kits include:

  • Crepe bandage
  • Triangular bandage
  • Pain relief (paracetamol)
  • Antihistamine
  • Dressing strips (plasters)
  • Medical tape
  • Sterile wipes
  • Face shield
  • Gauze dressings
  • Disposable gloves
  • Safety pin
  • Scissors
  • Sunscreen
  • Waterproof bag

CLOTHING

  • Tramping boots
  • 2 X Polypropylene or merino underwear
  • 2 X longjohns
  • Warm jersey or jacket (overwear, fleecy)
  • Shorts
  • Underwear
  • 2 X Trousers/Pants
  • 2 X Shirt
  • 2 X Socks
  • Gloves
  • Balaclava/beanie
  • Sun hat
  • Waterproof parka
  • Waterproof over-trousers

ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT

  • Tramping backpack
  • Day-pack 
  • Torch and spare batteries
  • Pocket knife, whistle, compass
  • Pack
  • Toiletries including toilet paper, toothbrush, soap and towel
  • Eating utensils and plate
  • Personal first aid kit (see list)
  • Notebook & pencil
  • Sunblock
  • Insect repellent
  • Overnight shelter – tent, fly, bivvy bag
  • Billy
  • Gas/fuel
  • Matches/lighter
  • Sufficient food for the length of the exercise
  • Drinking bottle/bladder 2l
  • Sleeping bag
  • Ground mat
