The curriculum is scaffolded into three levels with a progression of content;
- Level 1 – focuses on survival, self-leadership and an introduction to SAR and emergency response. In the first year there is a significant component of bush craft training.
- Level 2 – focuses on Search and Rescue and Emergency Response methodology. In this year students will complete modules through our partner organisations such as LandSAR, Coastguard and AREC.
- Level 3 – focuses on Emergency Management. During this year students will gain competencies in managing a full-scale emergency response and deploying the appropriate resources to deliver a positive outcome.
The program is supported by extensive online content, hosted in world-leading LMS (Learning Management System) application – YSAR CANVAS. Significant investment in this education platform has ensured a dynamic, interactive and authentic learning experience for students, while also providing consistency in resources and approach across instructors and branches as we grow.
YSAR CANVAS provides instructors, students, and strategic partners with evidence that we are meeting our learning objectives. Feedback loops are in place for students and instructors to provide valuable insight into the delivery of the program and content.

Costs
The annual fee covers YSAR equipment maintenance. A startup levy for year one students, covers basic standard equipment essential to the programme.
For each exercise, members are expected to pay for their own food and travel cost and provide their own clothing and equipment as specified. YSAR will provide guidance in what equipment is required for the programme. You’ll find a breakdown of course costs on our FAQ page.
Gear
All clothing and equipment must meet the minimum standards stipulated by the leaders to ensure the safety of each participant during any event. Special equipment may be required for specific exercises or events. To avoid pitfalls, please don’t go out and buy a full set of eqipment until you have spoken to your YSAR Branch Manager.
