Youth Search and Rescue (YSAR) offers a comprehensive 3-year training program tailored for New Zealand’s future workforce in Search and Rescue (SAR) and Emergency Management (EM). Designed for young enthusiasts aged 14-15, YSAR empowers students to thrive in survival situations, save lives, and contribute significantly to community safety. Program Overview: YSAR’s structured training is delivered one weeknight per week during the first three school terms each year, supplemented by six weekend training exercises and a culminating annual Search and Rescue and Emergency Management scenario operation. This balanced schedule ensures participants gain extensive knowledge and hands-on experience without overwhelming their school commitments.

 

Curriculum Highlights

  1. Bushcraft and Survival Skills: Learn essential wilderness survival techniques, from navigation and campsite selection to understanding and applying first aid in the outdoors.
  2. Advanced Communications Training: Dive into advanced communication methods, including VHF radio operations and satellite communications, crucial for effective SAR operations.
  3. Ecology and Environmental Care: Explore New Zealand’s unique flora and fauna with a focus on conservation and practical application in wilderness survival.
  4. Incident Management Proficiency: Gain expertise in managing complex emergency scenarios through comprehensive training on Incident Management Teams within CIMS frameworks.
  5. Leadership Development: From basic to advanced outdoor leadership, students develop essential skills in decision-making, team management, and strategic problem-solving.
  6. Comprehensive Navigation Training: Master land and marine navigation to enhance operational effectiveness in SAR missions.
