YSAR have introduced a new subject into their 3 year training programme focusing on UAV/Drones in Search and Rescue and Civil Defence Emergency Management. This subject is as an element of their extensive Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) focus. The UAV subject is being supported by local Tauranga company GPS-IT who have donated a DJI Phantom drone. Youth will learn skills, ranging from drone piloting, CAA regulations 101 and 102, operational deployment of drones in a Search and Rescue and Civil Defence Emergency, aerial surveillance, capturing aerial imagery, FLIR and development of providing live telemetry to the base of operations on he Sigfox network. UAVs have significant benefits in SAR and CDEM operations, and our youth are obvious ones to help bring the distruptive technology through.
