YSAR interviews next generation of Search and Rescue volunteers

Youth Search and Rescue interviews the next generation of Search and Rescue and Emergency Management practitioners for the 2021 Cohort in Auckland and the Bay of Plenty regions

We had a fantastic day of interviewing on Saturday 7th November, interviewing 60 students in Tauranga and Auckland. We have a great demographic of students in both regions for next year having to close off applications in October due to the significant interest in joining the 3 year training programme. We have 50% girls across the two groups which is really encouraging to see.

YSAR (est 2008) is a feeder organisation to the Search and Rescue and Emergency Management sectors providing much need youth and diversity in its volunteers, future proofing SAR for generations to come. It’s great to see the amazing diversity coming in through our student applications.

The new students in year 10 and 11 at secondary school, start in February 2021 and will be with us for 3 years. We have students from 38 different secondary schools in the Bay of Plenty and Auckland. We have a growing mix of cultures represented including; Asian, Continental European, Indian, Maori, NZ European, Samoan and Tongan.
